The Rebels’ Boys Soccer Team defeated Southside 2-0 Monday night at Lon Armstrong stadium for their first playoff win in three years. Mid-Carolina dominated possession in the first half but despite multiple chances could not get a goal and the match went to the half tied at zero. Early in the second half the Rebels broke through when Eduardo Lopez chased down a ball that ricocheted off another player and blasted it into the net from close range. The Rebels had an excellent chance to add a second goal when they were awarded a penalty kick when Southside was called for a foul in their own box. But Calen McManus pushed the shot just to the left of the goal. Mid-Carolina would eventually earn a second goal, albeit in unconventional fashion. McManus sent a long clearance from the Rebels own side of the field and Maurice Hergott raced after it. A Southside defender, the keeper, and Hergott all collided going after the ball but no one got the ball and it rolled into the goal for the Rebels. Tensions rose in the final minuets of the match and players for both sides were shown yellow cards either for hard fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct. In the end the Rebels held on for the shutout and the victory. Mid-Carolina will next face the winner of the Powdersville/Indian Land match.
