For the second time in as many meetings this year the match between Newberry and Mid-Carolina Boys JV Soccer teams came down to a penalty kick shootout. In the second round, played at Newberry High School Tuesday night, the Rebels came out on top. Mid-Carolina dominated possession in the first half but could not find the net and the match was tied at the half. The Rebels were able to take a 1-0 lead in the second half when Vance Horn scored on an assist from Brandon Perez. Newberry was able to tie the score on a free kick placed just out of the reach of the Rebel goalkeeper. With the score tied at 1 at the end regulation – just like their first meeting – the match went to penalty kicks. In the first version on March 26 Newberry was able to come out on top. This time the Rebels were ready. Goalkeeper Ethan Templin saved the first Bulldog chance and Newberry’s fourth round shot went too high. Chris Chapman, Perez, Christian Hernandez, and Alberto Leyva all converted kicks to secure the victory. The Rebels are 5-4 on the season and take on Clinton Friday night at home.
